Module 1: Connecting Children with Nature: A Montessori Approach

Many teachers struggle to effectively incorporate nature into their classrooms. Discover together how we can gently integrate nature into the classroom, recognizing the innate curiosity and wonder children possess. Explore how children’s natural inclinations can lead to transformative experiences fostering a deeper ecological consciousness. Gain practical strategies to cultivate this connection, nurture holistic development and bridge the gap often felt between children and the natural world in modern education.

Module 2: From Parts to Whole: Embracing Systems Thinking in Montessori

Understanding ecological systems and their interconnectedness can be daunting.Systems thinking is an approach to problem solving which takes into account the overall system as well as its individual parts. Embark on a journey to unravel the complexities of ecological systems with activities and resources for Montessori and holistic educators. Learn about and gain insights into the intricacies of systems thinking and explore how we can empower our students to grasp the interconnectedness of ecosystems. Together, we’ll address the challenge of presenting these concepts with confidence, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological systems in the Montessori classroom.

Module 3: Nurturing Environmental Stewards: Promoting Agents of Change

Motivating students to become eco-activists requires more than just classroom lessons. Address the challenge of inspiring students to take meaningful action for the environment. Explore strategies to cultivate a culture of eco-activism, empower students to become agents of change, and address the need for fostering environmental stewardship in the younger generation.

Three Learner Outcomes: 

  • Integrating nature-based learning: Many teachers struggle to effectively incorporate nature into their classrooms. Through this series, Tammy provides practical strategies and hands-on demonstrations to seamlessly integrate nature-based learning experiences into the Montessori curriculum. Educators will gain the tools needed to create immersive outdoor environments that foster holistic development in students.
  • Fostering systems thinking: Understanding ecological systems and their interconnectedness can be daunting. Tammy empowers teachers with a deep dive into systems thinking, offering insights and activities to help educators teach complex ecological concepts with confidence. By embracing a systems perspective, educators can inspire critical thinking and problem-solving skills in their students, preparing them to tackle real-world environmental challenges.
  • Cultivating a climate of eco-activism: Motivating students to become eco-activists requires more than just classroom lessons. Tammy guides educators in designing service-learning projects and collaborating with local communities to inspire meaningful environmental action. By creating a supportive eco-conscious school culture, educators can empower students to become agents of change in their communities and beyond.

About the Presenter

Tammy Oesting

Tammy has held positions at every level within Montessori schools and is certified to teach 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12 students. She is a teacher educator and advisor for multiple training centers, an accomplished public speaker who delivers lectures, workshops, and keynote addresses globally, and a practiced consultant who advises schools and training centers around the world.

Tammy Oesting has spent the last 25+ years delivering professional development workshops, consulting schools, and educating new Montessori teachers. Her passions include issues of social justice, educating support staff, life sciences, neuroscience as applied to educational practices, and exploring the magnificence of the world.

Tammy serves Montessori globally through her company ClassrooMechanics, a Montessori professional development company. Its mission is to increase the impact of and to spread this effective educational method through coaching, training and advising staff, parents, and schools.
