We asked Montessori Elders, “How do you support families in preparing their children for the new school year?” And here is what they said:

From Anne in Portland, Oregon:
“I send my families a welcome letter in June that includes a photo of my classroom team. I ask them to put the photo in a prominent place (like on the fridge), so that over the summer parents can point to it, say our names, and mention something they know about us. “Did you know Ms. Jackson’s has a cocker spaniel named Rocket?” I also send a postcard addressed to the child over the summer sharing one detail about my summer and that I am excited to see them when school starts. The children are always so excited to get something in the mail!

From Leo in Dallas, Texas:
“I create an online sign up and offer new families the opportunity to schedule a 30 minute phone call or Zoom with me. This is a great chance for us to get to know each other, for the family to share information about their child, and ask questions about the new school year. This builds trust and partnership with families before the school year even begins! It’s definitely work the time investment.”

From Gabbi in Arlington, Virginia:
“I invite my families to an open house in my classroom the week before school starts. Students visit their cubby, meet the class pet, and enjoy a snack. The event ends with a class community playdate on our playground. We use an online sign-up so the families can bring drinks, watermelon, etc.”

From Spencer in Fayetteville, North Carolina:
“One of my favorite ways to get to know and deepen relationships with parents and students before a school year starts is to do home visits over the summer months! My co-lead and I opened ourselves up to mealtime or tea invitations from new and existing families. Students were very proud to host us and enjoyed giving tours and showing us favorite things while we spent time just being together in their space. This laid a strong foundation for parent engagement in the classroom throughout the school year.”
